The architect has tried to counteract the rigorous design of the former Town Hall, which is oblique with this playful building. The building has two parts. The largest space of the building lies like a fish body along the Beacon. It is an elongated section that follows the curvature of the tail. A smaller space is like a fiery fish tail along the Touwbaan. The building's main façade is largely built of ultramarine blue glass just like the northern headland. The roofing is made of zinc.

At this place, the textile factory of Van Heek Scholco once stood. In the 1970s, the textile industry in Almelo was in severe weather, the one after another had to close the gates. Van Heek Scholco was no exception. The factory was closed, the factory buildings dismantled and eventually demolished in 1989. Only the factory pipe and the porter watch could remain as a reminder of an important piece of Almelo textile history. A town pond was created around the property, which today is part of the channel that reaches the inner city of Almelo. The property is now Greek restaurant Crete.

Old City Hall
In the place where the textile company Palthe used to be, in 1972 the new Almelo City Hall came. Architect J.J.P. Oud was one of the most important representatives of modern architecture in the Netherlands. The town hall is the last realized design of J.J.P. Oud. The architect has made the sober-shaped building more lively through the use of various materials and colors. The three connected spaces each have their own color: yellow, white and blue. The large glass facade behind which officials work must portray openness and involvement with the city. The 2 meter high sculptures on the roof at the rear, symbolize birds representing that Church and Province.
